BMW X5 (E70) buying advice article. It is a contradiction.
If you want a good handling, sporty SUV with
a higher seat, you end up with Porsche or BMW.
Both brands are good at this.
BMW jumped in early with the X5.
They're working on the 3rd generation.
This is the 2nd generation X5.
Several engines were available.
They all were bigger and nicer.
There were no 4-cylinder engines in this era.
There were straight-6s and big V8s.
ENGINES
gasoline, diesel
About 200 BMW X5s of this generation
are for sale on Marktplaats.
Most have a diesel engine; 75%.
A lot of cars with a gasoline engine have
a big V8; 50%, which is surprising.
Prices start at 15,000 euros
and go up to 70,000 euros.
That's a lot. These are expensive cars.
We'll get back to that later.
PRICES
minimum, maximum
The 1st general warning, which is a bit redundant:
these cars can be taken off-road.
It rarely happens, but still, check the underbody,
especially if the car is in off-road specifications.
Not with the sporty tires, but with
the more rugged tires and more plastic.
It may have been taken off-road,
so check the underbody for damage.
Another general point: the automatic transmissions
don't need a flush. They have long-live oil, etc.
Still, it can help to change the oil every
once in a while and to flush the system.
This helps to keep the transmission
running smoothly.
Another thing is the tires. These are big, heavy cars.
They are relatively fast. They have big tires,
which relatively wear fast.
They're expensive tires to replace.
It should have run-flat tires.
That is something to keep in mind. When looking
at a second-hand car, check the tires' brand.
Chinese or off-brand tires
are installed sometimes.
The X5 doesn't like that.
The handling can get really bad.
It doesn't help the safety either.
Another expense is the brakes.
These wear fast under a big, fast, heavy car.
You can see where this is going.
All X5 parts are relatively expensive because
of the car's price when it was new.
We already told you.
This is a car from a higher segment.
When buying a new X5
it is rarely under 100,000 euros.
It is usually over 100,000 euros,
which is reflected in the price of parts.
It is not a cheap car to drive.
The sunroof, which this car
has as well, is wonderful.
It adds some light to these dark days.
Sometimes it won't come out
of the ventilation position.
It has metal parts coated with plastic.
Dirt and water can get in,
causing rust and expansion.
It doesn't want to close anymore.
A BMW dealer likes to replace
the entire roof cassette. That's expensive.
However, there are specialists
who do repair the roof.
If you have this problem,
google and you'll find someone.
There are some electronic issues.
If the handbrake gives errors,
the problem often lies with the wiring.
You should fix this ASAP. If not,
the module breaks and that's expensive.
The backup camera is another thing.
Check if it works and gives a normal image.
This is something that breaks
relatively often as well.
In the early years there were
complaints about creaky dashboards.
It was forced into the body. It expands and
contracts with extreme temperature fluctuations.
You hear it creaking when going
from very cold to very warm.
It's not easy to fix. If you hear it during a test drive,
ask yourself if it will annoy you.
We found this car at Holland Car Company
in Moordrecht.
It's black on the outside. That may be a bit boring,
but it does have a very pretty dark brown interior.
